PRESS RELEASE
Lewis County Public Works would like to announce that the Jackson Highway Bridge crossing the Newaukum River will be open to traffic on Friday, February 18, 2011, at 4 p.m. Future work will occur, with flagger-controlled, one-way traffic during working hours and unrestricted two-way traffic during non-working hours.
The bridge replacement contract was awarded to Rognlin’s Incorporated (Aberdeen, WA) in the amount of $2,153,027. Differing site conditions encountered during excavation for the bridge approach work required modified design and modified approach work. Additional work to address these changes increased the contract amount to $2,387,000 (estimated total until completion of all work). This project is 80% federally funded, with 20% Lewis County match.
Lewis County planned for weather delays during winter construction, and the bridge was originally scheduled to open in May 2011. Once awarded, the Contractor provided an “ideal” schedule that showed completion at the end of 2010. This schedule was revised due to early snow and heavy rain, along with delays for unexpected subsurface conditions encountered. Even with unsuitable weather days and the temporary shutdown to address subsurface conditions, the Contractor used 188 of their 220-day contract to restore all traffic-related items associated with the project. Remaining miscellaneous work will be completed intermittently within the next few months.

New online applications are being implemented for parcel data and for mapping.
The Assessor has a new PATS parcel lookup system (now called Lewis County Parcels), and the GIS Division of Public Works has reworked the online mapping programs to to be compatible with it.
We have combined the functionality of the two previous programs (PATSMap & CARLMap) into a single new program, the Lewis County Web Map.This program gives users added control over what layers to turn on and has newly available data, such as 2ft contours. The new map can be accessed directly from the Parcels website or from our GIS Map Library.

WSDOT TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Closures of SR 508 no longer in effect - Posted at: 9/14/2010 9:36:00 AM
Full closures of SR 508 start Monday, Sept. 20 & extend thru Oct 1
MORTON – Drivers on SR 508 near Mosswood Road (milepost 29.8) will encounter full daytime closures of the highway the next few weeks for an ongoing erosion repair and prevention project.
SR 508 will be fully closed between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20 through Friday, Oct 1 while crews use a large crane to set the major pieces of an erosion prevention structure in place.
SR 508 must be closed during this work because the 180-ton crane takes up both lanes of the narrow highway and there is no room for drivers to safely pass through the work zone.
Crews will use the crane to place logs and 22,000-pound boulders every 50 feet underneath SR 508, forming an anchor-boulder structure. The logs are then lashed to the boulders and the structure is filled with smaller boulders to provide a more stable base for the highway.
The anchor-boulder structure also protects the embankment from further erosion by the Tilton River.
SR 508 will be open between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Drivers can expect minor delays while an automated signal controls single-lane traffic. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph while the signal is in place.
Drivers can use US 12 and SR 122 as an alternate route during closures and construction on SR 508.

The Federal Transportation Acts have provided a 10% set-aside from the Surface Transportation Program (STP) for the enhancement program. The purpose of the transportation enhancement program is to fund projects that allow communities to strengthen the local economy, improve the quality of life, enhance the travel experience for people traveling by all modes and protect the environment. Projects must relate to surface transportation, and include at least one of the twelve (12) qualifying activities contained in the information located here.
Applications are due by 5pm, Friday, July 16, 2010.
